Module 1: The Fundamentals of Private Equity
Define private equity, understand its growth and evolution over the past several decades, the relationship between and distinctions of public and private equity, the essential characteristics of venture capital, growth equity, and buyout, and analyze private equity performance, including considering vintage years, and performance dispersion.
Module 2: Venture Capital
Define venture capital and its role in a portfolio and the stages of venture capital, the relationship between public and private equity and its impact as well as understanding historical performance and risk and return stages and within vintage years, along with key considerations when allocating to venture capital.
Module 3: Growth Equity
Define growth equity investing and differentiate it from venture capital and buyout investing. Understand the role of growth equity GPs and investment structure in target companies and the historical performance of growth equity compared to venture capital and buyout strategies.
Module 4: Buyout Strategies
Define buyout strategies, the characteristics of target buyout companies, and the common objectives of buyout transactions, differentiate the strategies and objectives that a GP might pursue. Understand the historical performance and risk and return drivers of buyout performance, including the LBO model, interest rates, valuations, and evolution of buyouts since their inception.
Module 5: Private Equity Portfolio Implementation
Understand methods of accessing private equity investments across fund vehicles, historical performance across venture capital, growth, and buyouts, and impact of sectors, vintage years, and performance dispersion as well as how private equity is integrated into a broader asset allocation, client goals, illiquidity and smoothed returns, sector, style, and portfolio sourcing. portfolio implementation considerations, including cash flow management, commitment strategies, vintage year diversification, and tax considerations.
