Emily Palmer’s Journey from Teaching to Financial Planning
Your background is not a barrier. It may be your greatest strength.
Emily Palmer spent six years as a high school science teacher, helping students learn about biology, chemistry and environmental science. Then a family move connected to her husband’s Army career opened an unexpected door: financial planning.
What began as a personal interest in managing her own finances quickly became something bigger. Emily entered financial services in an entry-level role and saw firsthand that enthusiasm matters, but credibility opens doors.
That's when she made one of the most important decisions of her career: pursuing CFP® certification.
Earning CFP® certification enabled Emily to demonstrate both her knowledge and her commitment to the profession. She also discovered that the skills she built as a teacher — meeting people where they are, building trust, tracking progress and supporting long-term growth — translated powerfully to financial planning.
Today, Emily is proud to help individuals and families organize their financial lives and work toward personal, family and charitable goals.
Looking back, Emily believes that pursuing a credential sooner would have made her transition to financial planning easier. She encourages other career changers:
“The profession is both people-centric and highly technical, so choose a focus that aligns with your long-term goals and pursue it intentionally. By formalizing your interest through a credential like CFP® certification, you reduce the perceived risk of hiring a career changer and signal that you are serious about the profession.”
Emily's journey proves that a career change isn't about starting over — it's about building on what you've already learned and channeling it toward a new purpose.
For those wondering whether financial planning could be their next chapter, Emily's strategy is simple and easy to follow: take the first step, invest in yourself and pursue the credential that can help turn your passion into a profession.
