Updated Fitness Standards, Procedural Rules and Sanction Guidelines, Effective June 1, 2026
If you're pursuing CFP® certification — or thinking about it — we want to make sure you know about some recent updates before you apply.
On May 22, 2026, CFP Board adopted revised Fitness Standards, Procedural Rules and Sanction Guidelines, effective June 1, 2026. These changes update how we evaluate the ethical fitness of candidates for certification. The good news: Many of these changes are designed to reduce the burden on candidates going through the fitness evaluation process.
What's Changing?
All candidates must demonstrate ethical fitness to earn CFP® certification. Here's a quick rundown of what's new — and how the changes are generally working to streamline the fitness process for certain candidates:
Misdemeanor convictions. Candidates with certain misdemeanor convictions will now only need to file a Fitness Petition when Enforcement Counsel determines a public sanction may be warranted. This means a faster path for candidates with minor misdemeanor histories, while letting CFP Board focus on more serious concerns. To be clear, this doesn't lower the bar for certification — it just makes the process more efficient.
Faster resolution option. In some cases involving Relevant Misdemeanors, candidates and Enforcement Counsel can now jointly resolve a Fitness Petition without a full hearing — saving you time and reducing the overall burden of the process. This is entirely voluntary — you can always request a hearing instead.
What Should You Do?
If you have anything in your background that might come up — a criminal conviction, a bankruptcy or a regulatory action — take a few minutes to review the updated rules before you apply. Knowing what to expect makes the process smoother for everyone.
