Retirees often worry about outliving their savings, leading many to spend cautiously even when they have substantial assets. A 2024 study published in CFP Board's Financial Planning Review found that retirees tend to rely primarily on income sources such as Social Security, pensions, and wages, with the typical 65-year-old couple withdrawing just 2.1% annually from their portfolio and a single 65-year-old withdrawing 1.9% — well below the commonly cited 4% withdrawal rule.
