Board of Directors Application Announcement 2026

By Martin Seay, Ph.D., CFP® May 05, 2026

The future of financial planning and its impact on millions of Americans depends on the leaders who help guide it. If you see yourself in that role, I encourage you to consider stepping forward.

As Chair of the Nominating Committee of the Board of Directors of CFP Board, I am pleased to share that CFP Board is now accepting applications from individuals interested in serving on the Board beginning in January 2027.

The Board is the governing authority for CFP Board Center for Financial Planning and the Board of Directors and sole voting members of CFP Board of Standards. As the policymaking and oversight body of CFP Board, the Board plays a central role in advancing CFP Board's mission, acting on behalf of the public, CFP® professionals and the broader profession. Board Directors serve three-year terms, and each year two to four new Board positions are available.

To complement the experience and perspective of existing board members, the Nominating Committee anticipates identifying up to three individuals for board service. Selection priority will be given to those with the following backgrounds:

  • A client-facing CFP® professional from a firm with at least $2 billion in assets under management; preference for individuals managing at least $300 million in assets
  • A CFP® professional in an RIA leadership role with direct experience in private equity and/or rollup transactions
  • A technology professional (e.g., WealthTech executive) with deep expertise in artificial intelligence and its impact on financial planning consumers and advisors

Our Board culture is lively and collaborative. Board members have a real opportunity to help guide policy, shape the direction of the organization and elevate CFP® certification as the standard for competent, ethical financial planning.

CFP Board maintains its longstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion in all aspects of its mission and at every level of the organization, including the Board of Directors.

To learn more, please review the Position Description outlining the duties of a Board Director and download a Board of Directors Application. (Please remember to save the form to your computer before completing it.)

I encourage you to consider applying or to share this opportunity with qualified colleagues by the June 5, 2026, deadline. If you’ve applied in the past and would like to be considered for the 2027 Board of Directors, please submit a new application to reflect your continued interest.

Best Regards,
Martin Seay, Ph.D., CFP®
2026 Chair-Elect, Board of Directors
