CFP Board of Standards sets and enforces the requirements for CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® certification — to uphold standards of competency and ethics for financial planners who are committed to CFP Board of Standards to putting their clients' best interests first. CFP Board Center for Financial Planning advances competent and ethical financial planning and expands CFP® professional diversity for the benefit of the public.

A History of Setting the Professional Standard
CFP Board was founded in 1985 as a non-profit organization that serves the public interest by promoting the value of professional, competent and ethical financial planning services, as represented by those who have attained CFP® certification. There are more than 100,000 CFP® professionals in 2024, representing about 1 in 3 financial advisors in the U.S.

Governance
CFP Board’s Board of Directors is accountable for CFP Board’s success and responsible for its governance. The Board is composed of individuals with varied backgrounds, a majority of whom hold CFP® certification. The Board, in furthering CFP Board’s mission, acts on behalf of the public, CFP® professionals and other stakeholders.
