Scott G. Allison

Presentation: Best Practices in Career Pathing

Scott Allison is the Local Market Regional Executive for the Northeastern United States. He provides leadership and direction to the Wealth Management and Financial Center Teams.

Scott joined USAA in October, 2006. He has 20 years experience in the Financial Services industry where he led Money Management Group strategies for wholesaling and income planning, primarily for high net worth and retirement target markets. In the Spring of 2007, Scott was promoted to Vice President of USAA Select® and Trust Services where he was successful in integrating high net worth programs with an enterprise focus.

He received his Bachelor of Arts from The University of Texas Arlington and has obtained the CFP, CWS and RCC designations. He holds the series 6, 7, 8, 24, 63, 65 and life insurance licenses.

Prior to joining CFP Board, she was Director of Career Services at the University of Maryland University College in Adelphi, MD. She has also served as Director of Career Services at Stetson University in DeLand, FL. She holds a B.S. in psychology from Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, PA, an M.S. in counseling and human relations from Villanova University in Villanova, PA, and a Ph.D. in higher education from the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ.

Rich Burnes is Program Director for UCLA Extension’s Financial Management programs where he manages the curriculum areas in accounting, finance, personal financial planning, and taxation. He is a member of UCLA Extension’s Leadership Group and also serves on several strategic management committees and certificate advisory boards. Rich is currently on the Executive Board for the FPA_LA chapter and is actively involved with their career development activities.

Rich has over 25 years of broad-based experience in both private industry and continuing education, including manager and director level positions in general management and administration, financial analysis and control, marketing planning and strategy, and new product development. He received his BA in Accounting from the University of Richmond and MBA in Finance from Syracuse University.

 

Dr. Charles Chaffin

Presentation: Registration Criteria, CCI Reports, and Program Sustainability

Dr. Charles Chaffin arrived at CFP Board in March, 2010, where he provides guidance and oversight to the 380 CFP Board Registered Programs. His educational background has focused upon teaching pedagogy, curriculum and instruction, educational and cognitive psychology, learner assessment, and higher education administration. He has taught all levels of learners, from elementary school, baccalaureate, graduate, and doctoral studies through a variety of instructional platforms. Dr. Chaffin has worked with a variety of colleges and universities in developing and revising curricula to enhance student achievement in both degree and non-degree programs of study. He has published several papers that have focused upon the cognitive workload of learners in different task settings, reflective practice, and best practices in higher education curriculum and instruction, both within Education as well as within financial planning. He holds a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with an additional graduate degree from the University of Michigan.

 

Dr. Ann Coulson, CFP®

Presentation: “The next generation: what can we do to help?” – Conversations with young Fee-Only Advisors, current students, Fee-Only principals, and Program Directors whom teach the Fee-Only option to their students

Dr. Coulson’s prestigious career ranges from her instrumental role in the creation of K-State’s CFP® Board registered undergraduate program, to the Director of the Institute for Personal Finance under the auspices of the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education in Chicago where she educated financial and housing counselors, to her return to K-State and educating undergraduates and online graduates in financial planning. Ann is a NAPFA Academic Affiliate, on the Executive Committee for NAPFA’s Consumer Education Foundation, and the Consumer Representative to NAPFA’s National Board.

 

Mark Craig

Mark has 20 years of Human Resources and Staffing experience covering several industries’ including Insurance, Consulting, and Financial Services. Mark has been with Schwab for 10 years in Northeast Ohio starting out as the HR Business Partner for the Retirement Plan Services (RPS) business and for the past five years leading a remote Talent Acquisition team supporting the Institutional and International teams at Schwab.

In his current role, Mark is responsible for developing staffing strategies for each business and leading a team in sourcing, attracting and selecting the best talent for Schwab. In addition, Mark is the Project Lead for Schwab’s Employee Referral Network Re-Design, which was a two-year project that launched in May of 2014. Mark is a Gallup Certified Strengths Performance Coach and a Certified Talent Advisor through the Corporate Leadership Council.

Mark started his career as a Human Resource Generalist for The Westfield Group, a large Insurance Company in Ohio, then went on to do a variety of HR Consulting work. Mark holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Judson University in Elgin, Illinois.

In addition to his professional duties, Mark is currently the President of the Board of Education for the Norwayne School District in northern Wayne County, Ohio. Mark and his wife Stephany have three children: all in college.

 

Dr. Benjamin Cummings, CFP®

Assurance of Learning Across the Curriculum

Benjamin F. Cummings, Ph.D., CFP®, is an assistant professor at Saint Joseph’s University, where he teaches financial planning courses in the CFP Board registered programs.  He received a Ph.D. in Personal Financial Planning from Texas Tech University, where he also volunteered as a Red to Black® financial counselor.  He has completed award-winning research on the use and value of financial advice, especially as it relates to retirement decisions.  Benjamin has also worked on funded projects related to the regulation of professional financial advice.  Previously, Benjamin was the Scholar in Residence at CFP Board, and he also worked briefly for FJY Financial, a fee-only financial planning firm in Northern Virginia.

 

Dr. Isabelle Gonthier

Presentation: Exam Session

As the Director, Examinations at the CFP Board, and the Senior Director, Certification Process and Examinations at Financial Planning Standards Council (FPSC), Isabelle Gonthier oversees the development and administration of the examination leading to the Certified Financial Planner®/CFP® designation in both the US and Canada.

Throughout her career, Dr. Gonthier has managed the development and administration of national licensure and certification examinations and assessment tools for various professions in the financial, health, and IT sectors. She has facilitated numerous committees, including competency profile and job task analysis development, blueprint development, item writing, exam building, and standard setting and has managed complex projects involving diverse teams of internal and external specialists.

Dr. Gonthier holds a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Ottawa in Canada and has been providing her expertise in Testing and Measurement, and Certification for almost 15 years.

John E. Grable, Ph.D., CFP®, holds an Athletic Association Endowed Professorship at the University of Georgia. Dr. Grable served as the founding editor for the Journal of Personal Finance and the founding co-editor of the Journal of Financial Therapy. His research interests include financial risk-tolerance assessment, financial planning help-seeking behavior, and psychophysiological economics. He Director of the Financial Planning Performance Laboratory at the University of Georgia.

 

Suzanne M. Gradisher

Suzanne M. Gradisher is an Assistant Professor of Business Law at The University of Akron. She has served as the Director of the university’s CFP Board of Standard’s Inc. registered program and faculty advisor for the school’s FPA student chapter since 2011. She has earned her Master of Taxation and Juris Doctorate from The University of Akron, Master of Business Administration from Kent State University and here Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Suzanne is also a Certified Public Accountant (inactive). She has focused her research in accounting, taxation, financial planning and law.
 

Dr. Vickie L. Hampton, CFP®

Presentation: Top Ten Tips for Building Capacity in the Financial Planning Profession

Vickie L. Hampton is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Personal Financial Planning at Texas Tech University.  She has authored numerous articles on career development and related issues in the financial planning profession, determinants of success on the CFP® Certification Examination, and financial planning benchmarks for measuring financial well being of families.  She has been active on national boards serving on the Board of Trustees for the American College, the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) Board of Governors, the CFP Board of Examiners, the NEFE Academic Advisory Council, the Academy of Financial Services Board, and the Louisiana State University CFP Advisory Board.  Hampton joined the Texas Tech faculty and the Center for Financial Responsibility in 1999.  She received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Family and Consumption Economics at the University of Illinois - Urbana.  Before coming to Texas Tech, she taught and conducted research in personal finance at the University of Texas - Austin.

Andrew J. Head, MA, CFP® brings more than 15 years of financial services experience to his position as the Director of both the Western Kentucky University CFP Board Registered Financial Planning Program and the WKU Center for Financial Success. He joined the faculty at WKU in 2010 and teaches courses on Personal Finance, Estate Planning, Tax Planning, Risk Management & Insurance Planning and the Financial Plan Development Capstone. He is the co-author of numerous chapters for the CFP Board Financial Planning Competency Handbook. He is a University Advisory Board member for Advisors Ahead, LLC and the faculty advisor to the WKU Financial Planning Association (FPA) Student Chapter. Andrew is the Membership Chair for the Board of Directors for the FPA of Kentuckiana. Outside of his duties with WKU, Andrew is the managing partner of Journey Financial Management, LLC, a multi-state RIA.

Jason G. Hovde, CIMA®, CFP®, APMA® is the Senior Director of Certification & Designation Programs and an Associate Professor at the College for Financial Planning. Prior to joining the College, Jason had a financial planning/investment advisory practice and was a branch manager for one of the largest independent broker-dealers in the country. Additionally, he spent several years with another independent broker-dealer, first as a trader and options principal, and then as a member of the senior management team. Jason holds two bachelor’s degrees, one in accounting and the other in behavioral science from Metropolitan State University of Denver, as well as an MBA in finance and accounting from Regis University.

Kevin R. Keller is Chief Executive Officer of Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP Board).  Under his leadership, in support of CFP Board’s mission to benefit the public by granting the CFP® certification and upholding it as the recognized standard of excellence for competent and ethical personal financial planning, CFP Board is pursuing ambitious goals related to four overarching outcomes: increase public Awareness of CFP® professionals; achieve Growth in the number of CFP® professionals; secure Recognition and Regulation of financial planning as a distinct profession; and further CFP Board’s position as the Authority in financial planning.

Since Mr. Keller joined CFP Board in May of 2007, CFP Board has:

  • Grown the number of CFP® professionals in the U.S. by more than 30% to over 71,000, even while strengthening the CFP® certification requirements with the addition of new bachelor’s degree and capstone course requirements.
  • Launched its first major public awareness campaign to increase awareness of CFP® professionals, funded at about $9 million a year, which has generated consistent and significant signs of positive momentum in consumer awareness of CFP® certification.
  • Secured its reputation as a strong advocate for consumer and investor protection by implementing a fiduciary level of accountability on those individuals who use the CFP® mark in the delivery of financial planning services and working extensively with individuals, as well as firms that employ those individuals, to ensure compliance with those standards – the highest in financial planning.
  • Relocated to Washington, DC and assumed a leadership role in advancing public policy positions related to financial planning that benefit the public, working in concert with other prominent financial planning organizations, and in collaboration with industry and investor protection organizations.
  • Reengineered its disciplinary and enforcement process to increase transparency and accountability by including “public” non-certificant volunteers on hearing panels, with the objective of assuring safeguards for the public and a fair process for certificants.
  • Released the Financial Planning Competency Handbook, published by John Wiley & Sons, the first authoritative and seminal work that outlines the knowledge, actions and contexts associated with financial planning.
  • Transitioned the comprehensive CFP® Certification Examination to a computer-based testing format.

Mr. Keller joined CFP Board after serving 16 years with the Association for Financial Professionals (AFP), a membership organization which provides products, education and training for treasury and corporate finance. At AFP, he held the position of senior vice president and chief operating officer for the prior seven years and managed programs and services for the 16,000-member organization. He led the organization's strategic planning process and enhanced and grew the Certified Treasury Professional credential.

Mr. Keller has held senior staff positions at several associations and earned the Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential in 2000. He holds a B.S. in agriculture and an M.S., both from Ohio State University.

 

Dr. Ruth Lytton

Dr. Ruth Lytton is a professor and Director of the Financial Planning Program at Virginia Tech.  Dr. Lytton has received various student association, college, university, and professional association awards for her contributions as a teacher, researcher, and career/academic advisor. In 2009 she was awarded the John H. Cecil Lifetime Service Award from the Central Virginia Chapter of FPA and in 2012 was awarded the national FPA Heart of Financial Planning Award.

 

Kathy Oakley, CFP®

Presentation: Ways to Leverage CFP Board's Partnerships with Registered Programs

Kathy Oakley, MBA, CPA, CFP®, Academic Program Director for Rice University’s CFP Board-Registered Certificate programs for over 9 years. Mrs. Oakley is a former member of the National Planning Team at Lincoln Financial Group. While a member of the National Planning Team Mrs. Oakley served as a regional director of planning for the Houston office of Lincoln Financial Advisors. Prior to joining the National Planning Team at Lincoln, Mrs. Oakley served as vice president and chief financial planning officer with Kanaly Trust Company.

Mrs. Oakley currently serves as a member of the Council on Education for the CFP Board of Standards. She is also a member of the Financial Planning Association and the Houston Chapter of the Texas Society of CPAs.

Mrs. Oakley teaches in the Rice Certificate program. She is also a co-author of, and contributing author to, case textbooks and instructor manuals used in CFP Board-Registered education programs across the United States. Mrs. Oakley holds a B.S. in Finance and MBA from the University of New Orleans.

 

Richard P. Rojeck, CFP®

Rich Rojeck is a Managing Director with Lincoln Financial Advisors, a broker-dealer, registered investment advisor and member of Lincoln Financial Group. He has over 30 years experience in the personal financial and investment planning profession.

Prior to launching a financial planning practice in 1981, Rich served six years in the U.S. Navy which included two deployments and a faculty assignment at the Surface Warfare Officer School. He ultimately attained the rank of Lt. Commander.

Rich maintained a financial planning practice for over 30 years working principally with high net worth business owners. He has been recognized as among America’s best financial advisors by Worth magazine. During this period, he also held various leadership positions with the firm.

Rich earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration from Oregon State University, an MBA from San Diego State University and is a CFP® professional. He served on the national board of the International Association for Financial Planning from 1993 to 1999, and was the organization’s President and Chairman. During his tenure, he helped lay the groundwork for the creation of what is now known as the Financial Planning Association, of which he has been a member since its founding. In 2009, he was elected to CFP Board’s, Board of Directors and now serves as Board Chair. Locally, Rich serves on the gift planning advisory boards of the University of California, San Diego as well as the San Diego Foundation.

Rich often serves as professional resource to the media and speaks frequently to both industry and public groups.

Rich and his wife, Joji, have three children and reside in San Diego, California.

 

Joyce Schnur, CFP®

Joyce joined Kaplan University School of Professional and Continuing Education in October 2006 as a Vice President and is currently responsible for the Financial Services businesses at Kaplan including the CFP® designation as well as the securities and insurance product lines. Currently, Joyce is an adjunct Professor for Duquesne University in the School of Leadership and Development in the CFP® certification program and teaches many of the Kaplan CFP® education and review courses.

Throughout her career, Joyce has been a frequent lecturer on many financial planning topics including Investments, Stock Options and Estate Planning at many corporate training events and has been a featured speaker at several regional and national training conferences.  Joyce has been quoted in various publications, including the Journal of Financial Planning, Registered Rep magazine and Pittsburgh T.E.Q. and has published in Executive Tax and Management Report where she served as an editor for several years.

Prior to joining Kaplan, she had over 20 years of financial counseling experience.  Joyce served as the practice leader for Deloitte Tax LLP’s Private Client Advisors Group in Pittsburgh, Buffalo, and Rochester. She directed the comprehensive financial planning services offered by the firm, including investment, insurance, retirement, estate, and income tax planning.  She began her career with the Ayco Company LLP where she served as an Account Manager, directly responsible for providing comprehensive tax & financial planning services to corporate executives.

 

Sue Slowinski

After working as a CPA for 15 years in various industries, as well as with public accounting firms, Sue became a CFP® and joined the Financial Consulate to better integrate her tax acumen into the broader context of financial planning. A former teacher, she still enjoys educating in person and in the past has written a Small Business column with Examiner.com. Sue is a NAPFA-Registered Financial Advisor and the Study Group Leader for NAPFA’s Baltimore Study Group, providing regular educational and networking opportunities to financial advisors in the Baltimore area.

 

Harry Starn, Jr. CFP®

Harry Starn, Jr., serves as the Director of the MBA in Financial Planning Program and Director of Distance Learning at California Lutheran University (Cal Lutheran). He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point and a Master of Science Degree in Finance from the University of Colorado in Boulder. He holds professional credentials as a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and was a co-author of the 11th Edition of “Practicing Financial Planning for Professionals.”

Harry has taught in Cal Lutheran’s MBA-FP program since 2005. In 2010, the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) presented him with the bronze award for Excellence in Distance Teaching. Harry formerly operated his own fee-only financial planning practice. Prior to starting his own practice in 1996, Harry worked as a registered representative with Financial Network Investment Corporation and later served as the Manager of Special Directors’ Services with Lipper Analytical Services, Inc., a consulting department to the mutual fund industry.

 

Stephen P. Wetzel, CFP®

Stephen P. Wetzel, CFP® is President and Chief Investment Officer of Prometheus Capital Management.

He provides comprehensive financial planning and investment advice to clients from all walks of life and across a broad range of financial circumstances. Many are business owners and professionals, soon-to-be retirees, the retired, and families facing multiple challenges of saving for their children’s college education and their own retirement and caring for aging parents. Because of his dedication, integrity and steadfast judgment, many of Steve’s clients have come to think of him as extended family—someone whom they can depend on during life’s celebrations and crises to help keep them on track toward achieving their financial goals.

Steve is widely quoted in the financial press, including Business Week Magazine, the Philadelphia Inquirer, Money Magazine and Financial World and numerous articles by the Associated Press. He has been interviewed as an industry expert on various television networks and radio shows including WHYY-TV, FOX News, the Jim Bo Hannon Radio Talk Show, WABC Radio, Bloomberg, and WBZ Radio.

Steve has taught at New York University since 1991 and has trained thousands of individuals in financial planning. At NYU, Steve is currently Program Director and Adjunct Professor of Financial Management for the CFP® program. He teaches Fundamentals of Financial Planning and Fundamentals of Individual Investing, How to Stabilize Your Portfolio, and How to Jump-Start Your CFP® Practice. He has also taught Estate Planning, and Retirement Planning & Employee Benefits, and received the Award for Outstanding Service (2000) and Award for Teaching Excellence (2002).

He has served on the Board of Directors of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Financial Planning Association for over 10 years; most recently as President and Chairman. He is listed in Who’s Who of Finance and Industry the Who’s Who of Entrepreneurs. Prior to his career in Financial Planning and Wealth Management, he worked as a Financial Manager for a Leveraged Buy-Out firm and in the Airline Industry for People Express Airlines.

Steve received his MBA, cum laude, in Finance and International Business from New York University (NYU). He earned his B.A., magna cum laude, in Honors Economics from the State University of New York-Stony Brook. He has also attended Wharton Business School–University of Pennsylvania, and has an Advanced Professional Certificate in accounting from NYU's Stern Graduate Business School.

As a youth, Steve earned the rank of Eagle Scout with Boy Scouts of America and currently serves on the Troop Committee and as Merit Badge Counselor to Troop 230 in Yardley, PA. Steve resides in Bucks County, Pennsylvania with his wife Christa and sons Brendan and Nicholas. He is an optimistic economist, dedicated family man, perpetual teacher and aspiring triathlete.

 

Dr. Walt Woerheide, CFP®

Walt Woerheide, Ph.D., ChFC®, CFP®, has served for many years as VP of Academics and Dean at The American College. He holds the Frank Engle Distinguished Chair in Economic Security Research and is a Professor of Investments. He has held appointments as a professor of finance at the Univ. of Illinois at Chicago, the Univ. of Michigan - Flint, and Rochester Institute of Technology, and been a Visiting Scholar at the Federal Home Loan Bank Board. He has served as President of the Academy of Financial Services and the Midwest Finance Association. His books include Introducing Personal Finance, published by John Wiley & Sons, and Investments, published by The American College. He has published articles in the Financial Counseling and Planning, Journal of Financial Service Professionals, the Financial Services Review, and the Journal of Financial Planning. He serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Financial Service Professionals and serves on the Editorial Boards of the Financial Services Review and on the Journal of Financial Planning.

 

Jeff Wood

As Market President, Jeff Wood serves as the enterprise leader for Bank of America in Greater Washington, D.C. Merrill Lynch Wealth Management provides clients with a personalized financial review and hands-on advice and guidance through a network of more than 15,000 financial advisors across the U.S.

Jeff joined the company in 1993 after a distinguished career serving in the United States military as a Naval Commander and Flight Officer. During his 19-year career with Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, Jeff has served as a financial advisor and a wealth management advisor, and has served as complex director in several locations across the U.S. He was named to his current position in 2009.

Jeff was born and raised in the D.C. area and is active in various veteran support organizations and military service advocacy groups.
