CFP Board is closely monitoring developments related to COVID-19. Learn more about the steps we are taking to respond.
Last Updated: March 24, 2020
The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is impacting all aspects of our lives – both professional and personal – and remains a very fluid situation. The health and safety of CFP Board’s staff, stakeholders, candidates and partners is our top priority during this unprecedented and challenging time. We will continue monitoring the impact of COVID-19 on our operations and stakeholders, and all related updates will be posted on this page for easy reference.
We understand that this remains a stressful and trying situation, and we ask for your understanding as we seek to make decisions that reflect our values and mission, and are as flexible as possible to support and accommodate our CFP Board community. The decisions we make in the coming weeks will take into prime consideration the health and safety of our staff and those who depend on us.
CFP® Exam Updates
Annually, over 8,000 people take the step of preparing and sitting for the CFP® exam. And we understand the dedication and sacrifice it takes to prepare. In some instances, people have been working toward this milestone for several years. We work closely with our partner, Prometric, on exam administration throughout the country. Below are updates on our current plans for 2020 CFP® exam administrations.
March 2020 CFP® Exam
COVID-19 impacted hundreds of candidates planning to sit for the March 2020 exam. Some early test site closures were announced early in the March 10-17 testing window, followed by a complete shutdown of all North American Prometric testing sites the morning of March 17. All candidates who were unable to sit for the exam due to COVID-19 are being rescheduled for the July exam and will not be charged a postponement fee. For those we have not yet reached, please be assured that you will be contacted and assisted with rescheduling.
As the situation rapidly unfolded during the March testing window, we tried to balance the health and safety of candidates with their desire to complete the exam they have been working so hard toward. We spoke with hundreds of candidates in our efforts to best accommodate them and will continue to reach out to those who were affected with updates and support. We understand the frustration caused by this situation and appreciate the patience and flexibility of our March exam registrants.
July 2020 CFP® Exam
Currently, there are no changes planned for the July 2020 exam administration, with a testing window of July 7-14. If future conditions related to COVID-19 change and affect the timing of the July exam, we intend to be as flexible as possible with all registrants in their rescheduling process, and will provide updates on this page in addition to direct communications with registrants.
Registration for the July 2020 CFP® exam is now open, and we encourage you to register and continue your preparation. Please note that at this time, scheduling your specific exam time and location can only be done using Prometric’s online scheduling option. You may register now and we will update you when additional scheduling options are available.
November 2020 CFP® Exam
Currently, there are no changes planned for the November 2020 exam administration, with a testing window of November 3-10, 2020, and with registration scheduled to open on July 16, 2020. If future conditions related to COVID-19 change and affect the timing of the November exam, we intend to be as flexible as possible with all registrants in their rescheduling process, and will provide updates on this page in addition to direct communications with registrants.

Online Education Opportunities
For CFP® professionals needing to complete continuing education (CE) for renewal of CFP® certification, there are many options available through online formats. Find CE programs registered with CFP Board through our search tool at www.CFP.net/FindCE.
For students actively pursuing the education requirement for initial certification, please be aware that CFP® certification programs have been actively moving to online learning options and working with us so you can continue your studies as planned.
Given these uncertain economic conditions, financial planning is more important than ever. With that in mind, we encourage you to continue your journey towards CFP® certification and actively stay in contact with your education provider to understand any impacts from COVID-19.
CFP Board Office Operating Remotely
In response to the ongoing COVID-19 situation and in an effort to protect the health and well-being of the staff and visitors in our DC office, CFP Board's office is currently operating on a virtual basis.
Please be assured that we are not suspending or closing operations, and staff will continue to be available to you on a remote basis. However, due to our remote status, please note that processing times may take longer than usual for paper forms and checks sent to CFP Board's office by mail. We strongly encourage the use of online forms and payment methods, especially for time-sensitive submissions such as renewal of certification.
If you had an in-person meeting planned at our offices, your staff contact will be reaching out shortly with instructions on how to participate virtually.
