COVID-19 Updates from CFP Board

CFP Board is closely monitoring developments related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Learn more about the steps we are taking to respond.

Last Updated: July 16, 2020

The health and safety of CFP Board’s staff, stakeholders, candidates and partners continues to be our top priority during this unprecedented and challenging time. We are continuing to monitor the impact of COVID-19 on our operations and stakeholders, and all related updates will be posted on this page for easy reference.

CFP Board's office is currently operating on a virtual basis.

Staff will continue to be available to you on a remote basis from their respective homes. Due to our remote status, the quality of phone connections may vary, and processing times may take longer than usual for paper forms and checks sent to CFP Board's office by mail. We strongly encourage the use of online forms and payment methods, especially for time-sensitive submissions such as renewal of certification.

CFP® Exam Updates

Annually, over 8,000 people take the step of preparing and sitting for the CFP® exam. And we understand the dedication and sacrifice it takes to prepare. In some instances, people have been working toward this milestone for several years. We work closely with our partner, Prometric, on exam administration throughout the country. Below are updates on our current plans for 2020 CFP® exam administrations.

september 2020 CFP® Exam:  Remote Proctoring option

Our candidates’ health and safety remain paramount to CFP Board as we continue preparations for the September 22-29, 2020 administration of the CFP® exam.

Our testing administrator, Prometric, has continued to update us on their work to provide safe testing centers. They have social distancing and sanitation protocols in place and have steadily been re-opening testing centers in recent weeks. Prometric testing centers are following the revised guidance from health policy organizations such as the US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) on preventing the spread of COVID-19.

However, we understand that some exam candidates have health conditions and other situations that may prohibit them from safely visiting a testing center. Therefore, for the September 2020 CFP® exam, we are making the remote proctoring option available to eligible candidates. This option will allow the eligible candidates to take the exam at a location of their choosing, observed by a remote proctor who will ensure the security and integrity of the exam.

The remote proctoring option will be available only to candidates who can meet criteria based on health or location. Eligible candidates include those who need to travel more than 50 miles to a testing center. Candidates who have a health concern will also be eligible. All eligible candidates for remote proctoring must meet technology requirements.

To learn more about the remote proctoring option, please read our Frequently Asked Questions. The remote proctoring option will be available to eligible individuals currently registered for the September CFP® exam, as well as eligible individuals who register for the exam before the September 8, 2020, deadline.

Please know that CFP Board will only move forward with planned exam administrations if we believe they can be conducted without compromising the health of exam candidates. For more details about our September 2020 CFP® exam, please also refer to our September exam FAQs page.

November 2020 CFP® Exam

We will offer the same remote proctoring option for the November 2020 CFP® exam, with a testing window of November 3-10, 2020, and with registration opening on July 29, 2020.

Future CFP® Exam Cycles

Although the July 2020 CFP® exam was postponed to September, CFP Board expects that in 2021 we will resume our normal schedule of three exam administrations held in March, July and November.
