COVID-19 Updates from CFP Board

CFP Board is closely monitoring developments related to COVID-19. Learn more about the steps we are taking to respond.

Last Updated: June 9, 2020

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is impacting all aspects of our lives – both professional and personal – and remains a very fluid situation. The health and safety of CFP Board’s staff, stakeholders, candidates and partners is our top priority during this unprecedented and challenging time. We are continuing to monitor the impact of COVID-19 on our operations and stakeholders, and all related updates will be posted on this page for easy reference.

We understand that this remains a stressful and trying situation, and we ask for your understanding as we seek to make decisions that reflect our values and mission, and are as flexible as possible to support and accommodate our CFP Board community. The decisions we make in the coming weeks will take into prime consideration the health and safety of our staff and those who depend on us.

CFP® Exam Updates

Annually, over 8,000 people take the step of preparing and sitting for the CFP® exam. And we understand the dedication and sacrifice it takes to prepare. In some instances, people have been working toward this milestone for several years. We work closely with our partner, Prometric, on exam administration throughout the country. Below are updates on our current plans for 2020 CFP® exam administrations.

september 2020 CFP® Exam

CFP Board has been closely monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic and reviewing the recommendations from national and state health organizations. As always, our candidates’ health and safety remain paramount to us.

Based upon the latest information, and given the forecasts for the next several months, CFP Board has postponed the July 2020 exam administration to September 22-29, 2020.

July testing appointments currently scheduled with Prometric will need to be rescheduled to available dates in the new September 2020 testing window (September 22-29). July exam registrants were provided with a 3-week priority registration period of May 18 to June 8, 2020. General registration for the September exam opened on June 8, 2020.

Please know that CFP Board will only move forward with planned exam administrations if we believe they can be conducted without compromising the health of exam candidates. Please read our FAQs here.

November 2020 CFP® Exam

Currently, there are no changes planned for the November 2020 exam administration, with a testing window of November 3-10, 2020, and with registration scheduled to open on July 29, 2020. If future conditions related to COVID-19 change and affect the timing of the November exam, we intend to be as flexible as possible with all registrants in their rescheduling process, and will provide updates on this page in addition to direct communications with registrants.

CFP Board Office Operating Remotely

In response to the ongoing COVID-19 situation and in an effort to protect the health and well-being of the staff and visitors in our DC office, CFP Board's office is currently operating on a virtual basis.

Please be assured that we are not suspending or closing operations, and staff will continue to be available to you on a remote basis. However, due to our remote status, please note that processing times may take longer than usual for paper forms and checks sent to CFP Board's office by mail. We strongly encourage the use of online forms and payment methods, especially for time-sensitive submissions such as renewal of certification.

If you had an in-person meeting planned at our offices, your staff contact will be reaching out shortly with instructions on how to participate virtually.
