CFP Board is a nonprofit, regulatory organization devoted to educating the public about the benefits of financial planning and ensuring that there are competent and ethical financial planners to serve consumers. We recognize the commitment teachers like you make to teach personal finance to students, but we realize that finding time is often difficult and you may not have had training in financial planning or related disciplines. Yet, acquiring this knowledge is critical to your students’ future well being. With that in mind, CFP Board has developed and assembled a variety of materials and resources to help teachers bring lessons in personal finance into the classroom and to make students aware of career opportunities in the financial planning profession. The materials we’ve assembled are easy to use and can be utilized as stand-alone lessons or integrated into existing curricula.

Financial Planning Curriculum Materials

In an effort to help you deliver quality lessons in personal financial management or to supplement existing curricula, CFP Board has collected the following resources:

  • Presentation Materials - Use this informational PowerPoint presentation, “Financial Planning 101,” to help teach your students the fundamentals of financial planning, including what it means in their own lives.

  • Links to Other Resources - Find links to other financial planning education resources where you’ll have access to tools such as lesson plans, student workbooks, teacher manuals, CD-ROMs, calculators and online dictionaries.

Careers in Financial Planning
What Your Students Should Know

Financial planning was named the #1 career in the nation by Jobs Rated Almanac in 2001, and continues to be ranked among the country’s top careers by a variety of sources. In response to growing consumer demand for comprehensive financial planning, opportunities for financial planners are plentiful. Career possibilities range from working in large firms, brokerage houses, banks and insurance companies to starting a private practice. Financial planners who want to distinguish themselves from others in the field often obtain the CFP® certification – financial planning’s highest certification standard. To educate your students about pursuing careers in financial planning and obtaining the CFP certification, the following free resources are available:

  • “Your Career” Brochure and “Steps to CFP® Certification” Flier - The "Your Career" brochure outlines what it means to be a financial planner, specifically a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional. Provide this informational brochure to interested students or place in your guidance counseling office. The "Steps to CFP® Certification" Flier is for students serious about becoming the best of the best and defines the steps necessary to achieve CFP® certification.

  • Student Paper Career Article - Ideal for inclusion in student newspapers or newsletters, this article highlights the thoughts and views of college students who have recently graduated and have just begun their career in financial planning.

  • Links to Other Resources - You and your students can search for colleges and universities across the country who offer educational programs in financial planning, as well as other helpful links.
