Topic: Financial Plan Development Course Requirement
Noel Maye, CAE, CEO, Financial Planning Standards Board Ltd.
In March 2009, CFP Board announced plans to supplement the CFP® certification requirements with a financial plan development course requirement that will require those seeking to attain CFP® certification to prepare a written and comprehensive financial plan and have their performance assessed based on the written plan and an oral presentation of the plan. This new requirement is anticipated to take effect in 2012, and CFP Board will be holding a public comment period on the proposed requirement.

This discussion, facilitated by Noel Maye, Chief Executive Officer of Financial Planning Standards Board Ltd. (FPSB) – the nonprofit association that owns the CFP marks outside the U.S. and benefits the global community by establishing, upholding and promoting worldwide professional standards in financial planning – will provide Program Directors with background on the international discussions and developments behind this upcoming addition to CFP Board’s CFP® certification requirements. Noel can speak to FPSB's relationship with CFP Board and to FPSB’s experiences with implementing this requirement in other countries, providing insights about the purpose of the financial plan development course requirement and the considerations involved in developing a defensible and assessable standard.
