How is the next generation of financial planners faring in today's environment? Is CFP Board's educational requirement meeting their needs or the needs of their future employers?

Attendees learned how the most common professional review cases are handled in a corporate environment and discussed novel approaches for incorporating these cases in the teaching environment.

Breakout 3: Islamic Finance
David Upton, Virginia Commonwealth University

There is a growing Muslim community in the U.S. and Muslims represent about 20% of the world's population. David presented an overview of the differences between Islamic and traditional finance, and the new Shari'ah compatible instruments that have been developed for investors and consumers.

Breakout 1: Innovative Approaches to Make Financial Planning Relevant to Students

Financial planning has two critical skills sets. The first is content, the hard science, the second is process, the art of building relationships. The presenters covered innovative curriculum approaches to each of these skill sets based on the experience of successful planners.

 

Breakout 2: Improving your Investment Courses
David Cordell, CFP®, Texas Tech; Mike Cates, CFP®, College for Financial Planning; Norman Boone, CFP®; and Linda Lubitz, CFP®

David Cordell facilitated this session on the Model Curriculum, good assessment practices and how the development of an Investment Policy Statement can add value to an investment course.

 

Breakout 3: Global Financial Planning Curriculum: Possible or Pipedream? and CFP® Certification, China and You
Noel Maye, CEO, Financial Planning Standards Board, and Mr. Feng Liu, Financial Planning Standards Council of China

Participants joined Financial Planning Standards Board for a dialogue on whether a global curriculum for financial planning is feasible/desirable, and how such a program could be structured/delivered. Attendees also learned about the introduction of the CFP® certification to the People's Republic of China and the role that U.S. educators can play in evolving the profession in one of the world's most dynamic economies.
