Search Tips

  1. If your search for an individual turns up with no results, it could be for various reasons. The most common reasons for not finding an individual are:

    • The individual is not a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional and is not certified by CFP Board to use the CFP® certification marks.

    • The information you provided in your search does not match or is missing from the information CFP Board has on file for the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional you are searching for. For example, if CFP Board does not have a business address for the individual you are searching for and you search by his/her state, no records will be found. You will need to modify your search and only search by the individual's first or last name.

    • The information you provided is either too narrow or too broad. The Quick Check is the simplest and easiest way to look up an individual. If you do not have the individual's last name and state, try using the various Advance Search fields to narrow in on your search.

  2. There is no difference when searching using lowercase and capital letters. For example, "Jones" or "jones" will both return a list of all individuals named Jones.

  3. If your search for a hyphenated name (e.g., Mary Murphy-Jones) turns up with no results, try searching for the first of the last names (e.g., Murphy).

  4. If your search for a name that contains a space (e.g., Van Buren) turns up with no records, try the name without the space or simply try the first couple of letters of the name to get a larger list.

  5. If you are unsure of the spelling of an individual's name, try using the Advanced Search and lookup the individual by their first or last name, a city, a state or a zip code.
If you continue to experience problems looking up a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional, it is recommended you close your Web browser, return to CFP Board's Web site and try your search again.
