Support CFP Board’s Women’s Initiative

CFP Board is asking all to join in the work of attracting more women to the financial planning profession and making the profession and CFP® certification more attractive to women.

CFP Board has seen impressive growth in the number of CFP® professionals in recent years. However, the percentage of women has remained flat at 23 percent. We believe that as more consumers recognize the need for and value of competent and ethical financial planning, we must build a profession that reflects the diversity of the public that we serve.

Share your support, or volunteer your time and passion to CFP Board’s various WIN initiatives such as being a WIN Advocate, serving on the CFP Board WIN Council, or take part in the “Faces of Women CFP® Professionals” campaign, by completing a brief form on CFP Board’s website at www.CFP.net/WIN-Supporter.

“Let’s Talk Planning” Blog: Common Financial Planning Mistakes

In a recent “Let’s Talk Planning” blog post, CFP Board Consumer Advocate Eleanor Blayney, CFP® shares insights for people feeling “squished” between adult children grounded by the tough economy and aging parents needing care and support. “A CFP® professional would be the first to answer that, in situations like this, there are no financial strategies that allow us to have our cake, and let others eat it, too,” writes Blayney. “There are trade-offs to be made, and everyone in the family needs to come together to find workable solutions. At the same time, there are smart approaches to this modern-day dilemma – ways to manage the additional obligations without completely forfeiting the prospect of retirement or other financial goals.”

CFP® Professionals: Apply for CFP Board’s Ambassador Program by August 18

Established in 2011, the CFP Board Ambassador program is powered by the contributions of a group of CFP® professionals acting on behalf of CFP Board in their local communities and with national news media. CFP Board Ambassadors are responsible for promoting CFP Board’s mission and increasing awareness of CFP® certification at a local level, in their own communities and regions. CFP Board Ambassadors may act as liaisons with their local media, participate in leadership initiatives and community-building events on behalf of CFP Board, or meet with local policymakers to promote CFP Board’s public policy positions.

The success of the CFP Board Ambassador program has been substantial, with Ambassadors highlighting CFP® certification in national publications such as USA Today, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post, as well as in their local communities. We have seen tangible benefits not only for the CFP® professionals involved as CFP Board Ambassadors, but for the CFP® professional community at large.

Given the success of the program, we are seeking to broaden our local reach as well as expand areas of financial planning expertise represented by program participants. A limited number of additional CFP® professionals will be accepted into the program, and special training and resources will be made available to all participants.

CFP Board will be accepting applications to the CFP Board Ambassador program through August 18. To learn more and to apply, visit www.CFP.net/ambassador.

If you have a true passion for the profession and want to contribute in a meaningful way to increasing public awareness of the importance of working with CFP® professionals, we encourage you to consider applying.

CFP Board Discloses Bankruptcies by CFP® Professionals

CFP Board recently disclosed the names of 8 CFP® professionals who have declared bankruptcy within the last five years and, under rules that took effect July 1, 2012, are not subject to disciplinary procedures but will have their bankruptcy disclosed.

The latest disclosure of bankruptcy filings by CFP® professionals covers the first quarter of 2014 and is made pursuant to CFP Board’s rules regarding single-bankruptcy cases. CFP Board does not investigate, and the Disciplinary and Ethics Commission does not adjudicate, bankruptcy-only cases.

Rather, CFP Board verifies the bankruptcy and notes the bankruptcy filing on the CFP® professional’s public profile, which is available through the search functions on CFP Board’s website. CFP Board will also share with consumers and other stakeholders who contact CFP Board regarding a CFP® professional’s certification status the information in the CFP® professional’s public profile, including identifying whether the CFP® professional has filed bankruptcy. All disclosures regarding a bankruptcy filed by a CFP® professional will remain on CFP Board’s website for 10 years from the earlier of the date the CFP® professional disclosed the bankruptcy to CFP Board or the date CFP Board became aware of the bankruptcy.
