The CFP® Certification Examination is designed to assess your ability to apply financial planning knowledge to real-life financial planning situations. By passing this exam, you demonstrate to the public that you are at the appropriate level of competency required to practice financial planning. You can apply for the CFP® Certification Examination after you have successfully completed an acceptable course of study (or its equivalent), including a capstone course registered with CFP Board.
Beginning in November 2014, The CFP® exam will be administered in a computer-based format during 5-day testing windows each March, July and November. Candidates can select their testing location from Prometric’s global network of testing sites, which includes more than 250 sites in the U.S. The exam consists of two 3-hour testing sessions separated by a scheduled 30-minute break. A 7-hour appointment is scheduled to allow time for check-in, and security procedures. The computer-based CFP® exam is not easier or more difficult than the previously-used pencil-and-paper format and maintains the same content outlined in CFP Board’s Job Task Domains and Principal Topics, which represent the knowledge and abilities required to deliver financial planning services to clients.
