CFP Board's 2014 Firms Summit
On December 4 & 5, CFP Board held its annual Firms Summit in Washington, D.C. The meeting was attended by 75 representatives from 40 of the largest financial services firms, including banks, wirehouses, regional B/Ds, independent B/Ds, insurance, RIAs, and service providers. In addition to significant opportunities to network, the meeting also included extensive discussions of topics on financial planning and the important role CFP® certification plays for your firms, your advisors, and your clients.
Sessions and panels covered a variety of topics, including trends in financial planning, a close look at "robo-advisors," a panel discussion on the future of financial advice, and a panel with heads of Registered Programs who discussed how to best leverage CFP Board's partnerships with universities and colleges. CFP Board also presented sessions on its Career Center and Women's Initiative, as well as a town hall discussion with Ray Ferrara, CFP® and Kevin Keller, CFP Board's Chair of the Board and CEO, respectively. Dates for next year's meeting in Washington, D.C., will be announced shortly. If you would like to attend, know someone who should attend or have ideas for sessions, contact John Loper, CFP®, Director of Corporate Relations, at JLoper@CFPBoard.org.
Survey: Certification, Training and Experience Matter to Consumers
According to a survey released by CFP Board on December 4, 2014, consumers, when evaluating financial advisors, are increasingly looking at what advisors know, including the type of advice they provide, their education, and years of experience.
In the survey conducted by ORC International, consumers with more than $100,000 in investable assets were asked about their views of financial advisors and certifications. Highlights include:
- Nearly 90 percent see a potential advisor's certifications as important;
- 86 percent would prefer to work with an advisor who has passed a certification exam and has completed a rigorous course of education;
- 82 percent say it is important for a potential advisor to discuss his or her training and certification, with more than a third saying it is very important to discuss before he or she is engaged;
- Two-thirds of respondents (65 percent) would abandon or not engage an advisor whose knowledge and training is limited largely to his or her company's products or services.

CFP® Examination Update
The first computer-based administration of the CFP® Certification Examination took place November 18-22, 2014 at professional testing sites across the country. With the computer-based exam, candidates select a testing date during the five-day testing window and choose a testing site from more than 250 Prometric testing sites around the country. Examinees received preliminary exam results immediately after they completed the exam, and official results from the November 2014 CFP® exam were released to examinees this week.
The transition to the new computer-based format represents the conclusion of more than 5 years of work to ensure that the exam remains valid, reliable and legally defensible in an updated format that takes advantage of the latest technology and best practices in high-stake testing. Learn more about the computer-based testing format at www.CFP.net/cbt.
Registration is now open for the first of the three 2015 CFP® exam testing windows:
- March 24-28, 2015
- July 28-August 1, 2015
- November 17-21, 2015
Please encourage your qualified colleagues to register at www.CFP.net/exam.
Financial Times Shines Spotlight on Successful Women CFP® Professionals
CFP Board is proud to announce that 30 CFP® professionals were named in Financial Times' "100 U.S. Women Financial Advisers 2014."
Financial Times generates this list by inviting brokerages, private banks and registered investment advisers to submit candidates, and uses advisers' self-reported data, regulatory disclosures and research to score attributes such as assets under management, growth rate, and credentials.
"The Financial Times report recognizes that CFP® professionals make up a third of its list, noting the CFP® certification has helped women advisers advance their careers and grow their businesses," said CFP Board Chair Ray Ferrara, CFP®. "This is certainly true of many of the nearly 71,000 CFP® professionals in the U.S. – men and women. As CFP Board continues its Women's Initiative to find solutions to increasing the number of women in the financial planning profession, we are pleased that so many CFP® professionals are being recognized as among the best women financial advisers in our nation."
