Opening Session: Thursday, August 8, 4:00 p.m.

How Do We Define Success?
Dr. Charles Chaffin, CFP Board 

During this session, Dr. Chaffin will discuss requirements, trends, and potential opportunities for CFP Board Registered Programs.  Available resources for sustaining and improving student achievement will be presented, with a focus on improving student retention and seeing students through to CFP® certification.  In this context, Dr. Chaffin will address the benefits of examining and refining program objectives for both internal and external use by institutions.

Tracking Degree to Certification Success: An Analysis of Student Histories

This session will present the results of a study of CFP® certification outcomes for students from three CFP Board Registered Degree Programs.  This study examined the trajectories of graduates from three diverse programs, exploring whether their outcomes included full CFP® Certification, passing the CFP® Certification Examination, taking and failing the CFP® Certification Examination, or never taking the CFP® Certification Examination.  The presentation will conclude by exploring the implications of this study for programs moving forward.

Using Internships to Enhance Engaged Education

Internships serve as a cornerstone for education outside the classroom--they enhance engaged education, allow students to focus on outreach, and provide stability in the transition from student to professional.  This session will address approaches to assist faculty and students with identifying quality internship opportunity pipelines with local, regional, and national firms.  It will also discuss how to motivate students and employers to participate in internship programs and how to bring internship experiences into the classroom.

Communication Essentials for Financial Planners: Teaching Techniques and Strategies

While there has been a shift from seeing financial planning as a purely mathematical practice to one based on client-planner trust and communication, there are few resources that illustrate how the concepts of communication and counseling can be incorporated into a curriculum.  This session is designed to help program directors and instructors integrate CFP Board’s Principles of Communication and Counseling topic into classroom settings. The presentation will focus on information and examples of necessary interpersonal skills, including recognizing client and planner attitudes and values, interpreting nonverbal behaviors, and listening effectively.  This session will feature experiential learning models and video examples to illustrate effective communication and counseling skills.

Integrating Financial Planning Software in the Classroom

Financial planning software, client tracking, and research and projection tools have become integral components in financial planning firms, and preparing students to deal with these technologies both gives them an advantage when searching for jobs and can provide an exceptional opportunity for engaged classroom learning.  Panel discussants will present solutions focused on integrating these software packages into the classroom.  The presentation will cover the benefits and logistics of various teaching methods that can be used in a variety of personal financial planning courses.  Methods and assignments used in teaching software in the classroom, benefits of certification for students, and the industry perspective on students with advanced training in planning-related software will also be addressed.

Teaching and e-Learning Personal Financial Planning in an Online Environment (with emphasis on "Real World" experiences)

The growth in online education provides an important opportunity to expand financial planning education, but poses challenges to student engagement.  This presentation will address the delivery of personal financial planning educational content in an online, distance-based learning environment. Specific examples and curricula will be offered in each topical area that are designed to encourage greater involvement by distance course participants.  This includes examples of student engagement through use of a Discussion/Message Board, recorded videos, live online sessions, timely article discussions, course projects, and weekly assignments.

Teaching Ethics and Agency Costs in an Introductory Financial Planning Course

An overview of how the financial planning industry (e.g., broker-dealers, registered investment advisors (RIAs) is regulated as well as why regulation is beneficial and how ethical behavior can be encouraged is an important component of a financial planning curriculum. This session will discuss approaches and resources for teaching these concepts in class.  The approaches and resources covered will include use of the publicly available FINRA BrokerCheck and SEC IARD systems and exploration of violations - and suspected violations - of the CFP Board Code of Ethics, Rules of Conduct, and Practice Standards, using publicly available anonymous case histories.

The Aging Boom: How Do We Prepare Our Planners?

This session  comes in two parts. Part I (about 35 minutes) will delve into the complexities of the decisions that planners will have to assist with as we age- Particularly in the field of long term health care and the numerous options where that can take place. We will look at trends that are emerging and important resource areas. Part 2 (about 15 minutes) will be a short piece on the National  Association of Personal Financial Planners (NAPFA)-how you can be involved,  the benefits, and getting your students involved.
