Dr. Jesse Arman

Dr. Jesse Arman is Vice President of Academic Affairs at the College for Financial Planning, where he is responsible for overseeing master's, certification, and designation programs in financial planning, financial analysis, asset management, and retirement planning. Previously, he spent 20 years managing campuses for Columbia College (Columbia, MO) and he concurrently taught accounting, investments, and finance. He continues to teach in graduate programs both online and on ground. Dr. Arman is a peer reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and also serves on the Commission's finance committee. He previously practiced as a financial advisor and has published and provided interviews throughout financial services media. Dr. Arman's involvement with the financial planning profession includes currently as Chair of CFP Board's Council on Education.

Elissa Buie, CFP® earned an MBA from The University of Maryland and a B.S. in Commerce from The University of Virginia. She has been practicing financial planning since 1983.

Elissa sits on the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for Financial Planning and is the Foundation’s current Chair. Elissa is a past Chair of the Financial Planning Association (US) and is also a Dean for FPA’s Residency Program. She has been named as a top advisor by Worth, Washingtonian, and Bloomberg Wealth Manager magazines. Elissa has appeared on The Today Show, CNBC, CNNfn, NBC News and McLaughlin One-on-One. She has been quoted in The Washington Post, Time and Businessweek magazines.

Elissa’s article, “To Feel . . . Like a CFP®”, was published in July 2000 in The Journal of Financial Planning (JFP). Her article, co-authored with Dr. Dave Yeske, CFP®, “Policy-Based Financial Planning Provides Touchstone in a Turbulent World”, was published in the July 2006 issue of the JFP, where their most recent collaboration, “Evidence-Based Financial Planning: To Learn . . . Like a CFP®” also appeared in November, 2011.  Elissa contributed 17 chapters to the CFP Board’s first-of-its-kind Financial Planning Competency Handbook, published by John Wiley & Sons.

Elissa holds an appointment as adjunct professor in Golden Gate University’s Ageno School of Business, where she teaches the capstone Cases in Financial Planning course.

Brian holds the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification administered by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards and he is a Virginia licensed insurance consultant for life and health. Brian was a former licensed nursing home administrator, a position which acquainted him with geriatric issues, including age-associated illnesses and the complexities of Medicare and other insurances.

Presentations: Opening Session: How Do We Define Success?Tracking Degree to Certification Success: An Analysis of Student Histories

Dr. Charles Chaffin arrived at CFP Board in March, 2010, where he provides guidance and oversight to the 340 CFP Board Registered Programs. He holds a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with an additional graduate degree from the University of Michigan. His educational background has focused upon teaching pedagogy, curriculum and instruction, educational and cognitive psychology, learner assessment, and higher education administration. He has taught all levels of learners, from elementary school through graduate and doctoral study, as well as classroom-based, online, and blended instructional platforms. Dr. Chaffin has worked with a variety of colleges and universities in developing and revising curricula to enhance student achievement in both degree and non-degree programs of study. He has published several papers that have focused upon the cognitive workload of learners in different task settings, reflective practice, and best practices in higher education curriculum and instruction. Dr. Chaffin is the editor of the Financial Planning Competency Handbook from CFP Board published by John Wiley & Sons.

Presentation: Teaching Ethics and Agency Costs in an Introductory Financial Planning Course

Benjamin F. Cummings, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the financial planning program at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, PA.  He received a Ph.D. in Personal Financial Planning from Texas Tech University.  While at Texas Tech, Benjamin led a team of graduate students in a retirement planning competition focused on addressing the lack of adequate retirement preparation of the Millennial generation.  Upon winning the competition, Benjamin and his team went to Washington, D.C., to share their ideas with policymakers.  His research interests include the use and value of financial advice and regulation within the financial planning industry.  Previously, Benjamin was the Scholar in Residence at CFP Board, and he also worked briefly for a fee-only financial planning firm in Northern Virginia.

Dr. Lukas Dean has been the Financial Planning program director in the Cotsakos College of Business at William Paterson University in New Jersey since August 2008. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics, Finance, and Global Business. His research interests are Registered Investment Advisers in the U.S. based on type of compensation, type of clients, agency costs, and potential conflicts of interest and how financial matters impact family relationships. He has a bachelors and masters degree from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He received his Ph.D. in Personal Financial Planning from Texas Tech.

Presentation: Path to CFP® Certification  Do Your Students Have the Tools to Succeed?

Ryanne Enyeart is a senior staff member in the Community and Member Resources team at the 23,000+-member Financial Planning Association® (FPA®). In this new and evolving role, she oversees programming that serves soon to be and new CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNING™ professionals.

She has worked in the association and not-for-profit sector since 2004. Prior to assuming her current position, Enyeart served as FPA’s Assistant Director, Consumer Services. In that role, she developed and implemented a variety of programs to increase public awareness about the value of financial planning, including the award-winning campaign Financial Planning Week®. Previously, Enyeart was employed by VICORP Restaurants, Inc. where she recommended, developed and implemented a variety of marketing programs to increase brand awareness.

Enyeart received her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Kansas.

Joseph W. Goetz, Ph.D. is an associate professor in the Family Financial Planning Program at the University of Georgia. He currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in financial counseling, financial plan development, and a practicum course in financial planning. His research areas of focus include experiential education in financial planning, financial risk tolerance, and financial therapy. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and completed graduate degrees in the areas of psychology and financial planning at Texas Tech University. He was recently selected as a University of Georgia Lilly Teaching Fellow and Service-Learning Fellow. He currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Financial Counseling and Planning, Journal of Personal Finance, and the Journal of Financial Therapy.

John E. Grable, Ph.D., CFP® holds an Athletic Association Endowed Professorship at the University of Georgia. His research interests include financial risk-tolerance assessment, financial planning help-seeking behavior, and psychophysiological economics.

Presentation: Preparing Financial Planning Students for a Career in Today’s Environment

Mike Greene is a 2013 Member of the CFP Board of Directors and the Senior Vice President responsible for Financial Planning and Advisor Business Development at Ameriprise Financial. As the leader of financial planning, Mike works to engage advisors in ongoing financial planning relationships with their clients.  Ameriprise is proud to have more CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals than any other firm.  Mike’s Advisor Business Development Group team is responsible for driving revenue growth through financial planning as well as client acquisition and sales strategies. 

Mike has been with Ameriprise since 2002, working in various roles within the broker-dealer. He is a Director on the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, and serves on the internal board of IDS Property and Casualty Insurance Company.   Prior to Ameriprise, he worked for McKinsey & Company as an associate consultant serving various financial services clients. After graduating from West Point in 1989, Mike served as an engineer officer in the U.S. Army. In addition, he holds a Masters degree from London School of Economics. Mike and his wife Stephanie have two children and live just outside Minneapolis.

Kevin R. Keller

Kevin R. Keller is Chief Executive Officer of Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP Board), the certifying and standards setting organization for personal financial planning.

Since joining CFP Board, Mr. Keller has established CFP Board as a strong advocate for consumer and investor protection by implementing a fiduciary level of accountability; built a public policy infrastructure to ensure policy makers understand and appreciate the benefits to the public of a credentialing model built on examination, education, experience and ethics predicated on the fiduciary duty of care – the baseline standards established by CFP Board; and led the reengineering and implementation of the organization’s disciplinary and enforcement process to increase transparency and accountability.

Mr. Keller joined CFP Board in May 2007 after serving 16 years with the Association for Financial Professionals (AFP), a membership organization for the finance profession that provides products, education and training for treasury and corporate finance.  At AFP, he held the position of senior vice president and chief operating officer and had management responsibility for programs and services for the 16,000-member organization. He led the organization's strategic planning process and enhanced and grew the Certified Treasury Professional credential. Mr. Keller has held senior staff positions at several associations and earned the Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential in 2000. He holds a B.S. in agriculture and an M.S., both from Ohio State University.

Dr. Ruth Lytton

Dr. Ruth Lytton is the Director of the Financial Planning Program at Virginia Tech.   She also provides student services (e.g., academic/career advising, internship supervision, and job placement coaching) and teaches three courses in the curriculum. Dr. Lytton has received various student association, university, and professional association awards for her contributions as a teacher, researcher, and career/academic advisor.  Over 5,000 students took her introductory personal finance course, which she taught for much of her career. She is an academic member of FPA, NAPFA, and the Society of Financial Service Professionals and serves on the FPA Academic Committee.  In 2009 she was awarded the John H. Cecil Lifetime Service Award from the Central Virginia Chapter of FPA and in 2012 was awarded the FPA Heart of Financial Planning Award.

Since 1983, Mike McCarthy has achieved a rewarding career in financial services by putting his clients’ interests first and providing exceptional personal service. He combines experience and knowledge to provide appropriate and customized investment strategies. In addition to serving his clients, Mike has been a Branch Manager for Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC since 1996.

Mike earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from Loyola University of Chicago in 1982 and received his CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional certification in 1990. His teaching experience includes serving as an instructor for the investments section of DePaul University’s CFP® certification courses since 2000. He currently serves as the Director of the Financial Planning Education Center for the university. Mike has served in various capacities over the years for the Financial Planning Association (FPA). He is a member of the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO) and a member of the ESOP Association.

In addition to his corporate and executive service capabilities, Mike specializes in thorough retirement and investment planning and believes a good investment program enhances personal wealth by helping to increase income consistent with each client’s risk tolerance.

Dr. Palmer received his bachelor’s and MBA degrees from University of Utah and his doctorate degree from Utah State University. He is a co-founder of the University of Georgia (UGA) Family Financial Planning Program where he teaches courses in financial planning with a focus on retirement and tax planning. He is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM professional and Certified Public Accountant. He has served on multiple editorial boards and currently serves as President-Elect of the Academy of Financial Services. He was selected as a 2007 Lilly Teaching Fellow, a recipient of the 2010 Richard B. Russell Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award, and the 2013 Engaged Scholar Award. Working in tandem with Tom Cochran and Georgia United Credit Union, Dr. Palmer has helped to expand the service-learning Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program in Athens, Georgia. This partnership has provided several hundred students, at UGA and throughout the state, with hands-on professional training and experiences, while providing thousands of hours of financial education and planning assistance to these households. Dr. Palmer is also affiliated with the University of Georgia ASPIRE Clinic. Dr. Palmer's research seeks to identify effective ways of motivating financial behavior change through brief intervention strategies. His research has focused on motivating savings among low and moderate-income tax filers.

Ron Sages serves as an Instructor in the Certificate and Master’s in Family Financial Planning Programs in Personal Financial Planning at Kansas State University, and is also a co-founder and President of Chapin Asset Management, a wealth management firm, based in Greenwich, Connecticut and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Ron earned his Ph.D. in Personal Financial Planning from Kansas State University in 2012, his MBA in Finance and Taxation from the University of Connecticut in 1979, and his undergraduate degree in liberal arts from Ohio University in 1973. His research interests are in behavioral finance, risk management, and financial literacy. As a financial planning practitioner and researcher, Ron aspires to bring applied research to financial planning practitioners in an effort to provide practical solutions to client-focused challenges. Prior to starting his own firm in 1993, Ron spent twenty years as an executive in private banking and global wealth management at Bankers Trust Company (now Deutsche Bank) and The Connecticut Bank and Trust Company (now Bank of America) in New York City and Fairfield County, Connecticut, respectively. Ron has published research in the Journal of Financial Services Professionals, the College Student Journal, and the Global Journal of Human Social Science, and has published in various professional journals including Trusts & Estates, Trusts and Trustees & International Asset Management, Trust and Investments, and Institutional Investors’ Private Asset Management. Ron is a member of the Stamford (CT) CFA Society, Estate Planning Council of Lower Fairfield County (CT), the National Association of Estate Planning Councils, American Council on Consumer Interests, and the Financial Therapy Association.

Joyce joined Kaplan University School of Professional and Continuing Education in October 2006 as a Vice President and is currently responsible for the Financial Services businesses at Kaplan including the CFP(r) designation as well as the securities and insurance product lines. Currently, Joyce is an adjunct Professor for Duquesne University in the School of Leadership and Development in the CFP® certification program and teaches many of the Kaplan CFP® education and review courses.

Throughout her career, Joyce has been a frequent lecturer on many financial planning topics including Investments, Stock Options and Estate Planning at many corporate training events and has been a featured speaker at several regional and national training conferences.  Joyce has been quoted in various publications, including the Journal of Financial Planning, Registered Rep magazine and Pittsburgh T.E.Q. and has published in Executive Tax and Management Report where she served as an editor for several years.

Prior to joining Kaplan, she had over 20 years of financial counseling experience.  Joyce served as the practice leader for Deloitte Tax LLP’s Private Client Advisors Group in Pittsburgh, Buffalo, and Rochester. She directed the comprehensive financial planning services offered by the firm, including investment, insurance, retirement, estate, and income tax planning.  She began her career with the Ayco Company LLP where she served as an Account Manager, directly responsible for providing comprehensive tax & financial planning services to corporate executives.

Dr. Hyrum Smith, CFP® is Assistant Professor within the Personal Financial Planning program at Virginia Tech since December 2009. He received his Ph.D. in Personal Financial Planning from Texas Tech University. His dissertation entitled "Three Essays on Financial Sophistication and Effective Decision Making," received the Robert O. Herrmann American Council of Consumer Interests (ACCI) Dissertation award in 2010. He also holds a B.S. in Accounting from Utah State University and a MBA from the University of Utah. His research interests include the influence of qualitative factors, such as access to financial sophistication or behavioral biases, on financial planning decisions in addition to improving effectiveness of student learning. He was the advisor for the team of students that won 1st place overall in the 2011-2012 national iOMe Savings Challenge. Prior to entering the academic profession he worked in the public accounting sector for KPMG, LLP, and as a treasury analyst for SuperValu, a Fortune 500 grocery retailer.

Dr. Jacob Sybrowsky

Dr. Jacob Sybrowsky currently serves as an Assistant Professor and Personal Financial Planning Program Director for the Woodbury School of Business at Utah Valley University. He holds a Ph.D. in Personal Financial Planning from Texas Tech University. Sybrowsky also attended Brigham Young University where he earned a Master's degree in Marriage, Family, and Human Development and a Bachelor's degree in Linguistics with a minor in Korean. Prior to joining the Woodbury School of Business, Dr. Sybrowsky taught in the Personal Financial Planning program at Texas Tech University.  His research focuses on inheritance and wealth transfers with a focus on personal and behavioral characteristics that can predict changes in wealth accumulation.  He also works as an Associate Planner for Evensky and Katz Wealth Management in Coral Gables, Florida.
 
When not working, Jacob enjoys spending time with his wonderful wife, Carrie, and “most beautiful little girl in the world”- daughter, Elizabeth.  They spend time running together and are currently training for the Boston Marathon. They enjoy developing their organic garden and growing their collection of heirloom seeds.  Most recently they have added beekeeping to a growing list of family hobbies.  When it’s time to get away, they fish and ski in the mountains surrounding their Provo, Utah home.

Presentation: Path to CFP® Certification  Do Your Students Have the Tools to Succeed?

James Tissot is a CFP® professional, currently practicing in New York City, Westchester County and the Hudson Valley. He is the President and Founder of Prism Planning, Inc., a fee-only Registered Investment Advisor. 

Tissot pursued a B.A. in Liberal Arts at the University of Michigan. He left prior to earning his degree to follow the dream of an acting career in NYC. He came to a Financial Planning career due in large part to the AIDS crisis. James started attending seminars offered at the NYC Lesbian and Gay Center on financial planning for the disabled and terminally ill in order to help friends with HIV/AIDS. He went back to school to complete his studies at SUNY Empire College and gained a certificate of financial planning from NYU.

In addition to his practice, he is an SME (subject material expert) at Keir Educational Resources where he writes, edits and teaches review classes for the CFP® Certification Examination as well as for FINRA/NASAA exams. He has authored a book on financial calculators and was the chief architect and contributing author of Keir’s “Financial Plan Development” textbook.    

He has been a member of FPA since 2000. He served on the Board of the FPA-NY from 2002 – 2009 after serving as President and Chair. At the national level, he has served on the Chapter Leadership Resource Council from 2007 – 2009 and was elected to the national Board of Directors in 2011. He resigned from the Board in October of 2012 to accept a staff position at FPA as the Director of Professional Education.

In some of his other incarnations, he was a bartender at Studio 54, had a catering company (“Not Necessarily Martha”), co-owned a restaurant in Manhattan and was Robert Maxwell’s event planner in the U.S.       

Carolynn Tomin, CFP®

Carolynn is the Program Director for Boston University’s Financial Planning programs and has augmented the development of these programs for the past ten years. She has taught estate planning courses, online reviews and CFP® Certification Exam courses at universities in Massachusetts and Florida, as well as for many banks and financial service companies in both states.

Carolynn is co-author of an estate planning textbook, Principles Of Estate Planning, published by National Underwriter in 2012. She served as a member of CFP Board’s Council on Education from 2009-2012, and was appointed Chair in 2012.

Former positions include Program Director for Merrimack College and co-founder of a continuing education company, Beacon Hill Financial Educators.

Dr. Tom Warschauer, CFP® is Professor of Finance Emeritus at San Diego State University's College of Business Administration. He is Director of SDSU's personal financial planning master's program. He is also Director of its Center for the Study of Personal Financial Planning. He was a member of CFP Board's Board of Examiners and was a founder and first President of the national Academy of Financial Services. The Academy is the nation's pre-eminent academic organization dealing with individual finance issues. Early in his career Warschauer practiced financial planning for fifteen years and was NASD Principal for a regional securities firm in Colorado, Maine, and California. Warschauer earned his CFP® certification in the second year it was available. He has been the Academic Editor of the Journal of the Institute of Certified Financial Planners and is an Associate Editor of the Financial Services Review. He is a member of the Financial Planning Association's Academic Council. His areas of research include a variety of topics related to personal financial planning and portfolio management. Dr. Warschauer has published articles in both academic and practitioner journals, such as the Financial Services Review, the Financial Review and the Journal of the ICFP. He earned CFP Board's 2003 Academic Article Award. Warschauer holds a Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Walt Woerheide, Ph.D., ChFC®, CFP®, is VP of Academics and Dean at The American College. He has held appointments as a professor of finance at the Univ. of Illinois at Chicago, the Univ. of Michigan - Flint, and Rochester Institute of Technology, as well as Visiting Scholar at the Federal Home Loan Bank Board. He has served as President of the Academy of Financial Services and the Midwest Finance Association. Dr. David B. Yeske, CFP® holds a doctorate in finance from Golden Gate University. He also earned an M.A. in Economics and a B.S. in Applied Economics from the University of San Francisco. He has been practicing financial planning since 1990.

Dave is a past Chair of the Financial Planning Association (US) (FPA) and has been named a top advisor by Bloomberg Wealth Manager. He has been quoted in national media including The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, Newsweek, The New York Times, USA Today, Investor’s Business Daily, San Francisco Chronicle, and The Journal of Financial Planning. Dave appears regularly on CBS, CNBC, CNN and NBC News. In 2009, Dave was profiled in The Wall Street Journal.

Dave has written feature articles for Research Magazine, San Francisco Magazine and The Journal of Retirement Planning. He co-authored with Elissa Buie, CFP®, “Policy-Based Financial Planning Provides Touchstone in a Turbulent World”, which was published in July 2006 in The Journal of Financial Planning. The results of Dave’s doctoral research were published in the Journal of Financial Planning in September 2010 under the title “Finding the Planning in Financial Planning.”  In 2011, the article, ”Evidence-Based Financial Planning:  To Learn … Like a CFP®“, co-authored with Ms. Buie, was published in The Journal of Financial Planning. Dr. Dave contributed 13 chapters to the CFP Board’s Financial Planning Competency Handbook, published by John Wiley & Sons in April of 2013.

Dave holds an appointment as Distinguished Adjunct Professor in Golden Gate University’s Ageno School of Business, where he teaches the capstone Cases in Financial Planning course.
