Participate in CFP Board's 2007 Financial Planning Clinic

CFP Board seeks CFP® certificants interested in volunteering at a Financial Planning Clinic in Boston on Saturday, August 4th 2007, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Sheraton Boston Hotel.

The Boston event follows the successful 2006 Financial Planning Clinic held at the Los Angeles Convention Center, which proved to be a rewarding event for both volunteers and attendees. In Los Angeles, more than 100 volunteer CFP® certificants made a positive difference in the lives of thousands of people by sharing their time and expertise to help individuals and families sort out their personal finance questions and concerns. The event was very well received by both volunteers and the public, with 100% of volunteers surveyed stating they would participate again, and 94% of attendees stating they would recommend attending a Financial Planning Clinic to someone else.

The Financial Planning Clinic may be the first opportunity many attendees have to meet face-to-face with a CFP® professional, and we look forward to assembling a group of first-rate volunteers to assist with this effort.

What is a Financial Planning Clinic?

At the Financial Planning Clinic, volunteer CFP® certificants will be available to speak one-on-one with members of the public about their financial questions and concerns. Volunteers will be seated at tables designated for specific financial planning topics, allowing attendees to choose a topic they are interested in and head over to a volunteer ready to discuss that topic. Volunteers will have opportunities to assist many attendees throughout the event but will speak to only one individual or one individual family at a time. Volunteers will not be permitted to hand out business cards or attempt to sell any products or services at the Financial Planning Clinic, but each volunteer's name and contact information will be included in the Financial Planning Resource Booklet each attendee will receive as they enter the clinic.

Clinic attendees will be required to attend an informative 15 minute briefing before entering the Financial Planning Clinic and speaking with a CFP® certificant. The briefing will provide attendees with the clinic layout and rules, an overview of the financial planning process and CFP® certification and suggestions for making the most of their meetings with volunteer CFP® professionals. Briefing sessions will be held throughout the day, from 9:40 to 1:15.

Volunteers will also receive a separate briefing before the clinic begins to provide them with an overview of the clinic layout and rules, a schedule for the lunch break, and an opportunity to ask questions. The volunteer briefing is scheduled from 8:45 a.m. to 9:20 a.m.

CFP Board has organized the Financial Planning Clinic as a way of furthering its mission of creating awareness of the importance of financial planning and the value of the financial planning process as well as helping underserved populations have access to competent and ethical financial planning.

Volunteer Application

If you would like to participate in the 2007 Financial Planning Clinic, complete the online application form. After your application is received at CFP Board, a representative will contact you with more information.

Volunteers will be required to participate for duration of the Financial Planning Clinic by providing financial information to attendees.

Volunteers will not be permitted to hand out business cards or attempt to sell any products or services at the Financial Planning Clinic, but each volunteer's name and contact information will be included in the Financial Planning Resource Booklet each attendee will receive as they enter the clinic. Volunteer names will also be posted on CFP Board's Web site.

A complimentary lunch will be served to volunteers at 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., and refreshments including coffee, tea and water will be available throughout the day.

Only CFP® certificants in good standing with CFP Board may participate.

Media Interviews

The 2006 Financial Planning Clinic in Los Angeles was covered by more than 75 media outlets, including ABC, CBS, NBC's Telemundo, LA Times and The Daily Breeze, as well as numerous other TV and radio stations, newspapers and online publications. We expect similar media interest in 2007. Financial Planning Clinic volunteers will be given preference when CFP Board arranges interviews between CFP® certificants and the media to promote the Boston event. If you are interested in speaking to the media about financial planning and the Financial Planning Clinic, please mention that to the CFP Board representative who will contact you after your volunteer application has been submitted.

Meeting Location

The Financial Planning Clinic will be held at the Sheraton Hotel Boston. Please bring your own calculator if you feel you should need one.
